Malawian develops Secondary school digital library

Malawian IT specialist Pilirani Kumasewera has developed a comprehensive software package for secondary school subjects dubbed Padziwe Digital Library (PDL).

The software contains learning materials which students can use in their study sessions. There are 9 subjects covered in PDL at MSCE and O Level.

Kumasewera said the software would simplify the learning process among students.

“I believe it is easier for a student to understand scientific subjects using videos, audios and animations. It is common knowledge that usually students are easily bored and turned off when reading dead text and diagrams on print-based materials such as books. With PDL, however, learning becomes alive to students and their concentration span is bound to increase,” said the 30 year old former teacher.

Kumasewera further emphasized that his aim is to improve education standards in the country.

He noted: “There is also a problem of lack of text books in school and public libraries. This software will address such challenges.”

He then disclosed that his company, Padziwe Systems has created jobs by employing youths in Information Technology (IT).

“My company works with the innovative youths who are passionate in changing the world using IT. Some of my colleagues are still in school and some were unemployed after graduating,” he added.

According to Kumasewera, the software has taken him 5 years to complete. He started building it in 2010 and completed it in 2015.

The subjects which have been digitalized include Mathematics, Biology, Physical Science, Geography and Chemistry among others.

The subjects are not on the website http://www.padziwe.com/ but rather on CDs which are being sold at K15, 000 each. Padziwe offices are located in area 25, sector 3.

Congratulations. but it is times like these which call for vibrant research community. these digital materials need to be reviewed by different experts in the different subject areas to assess the worthiness of the material. I who does he work with? which subjects does he teach? what criteria did he use when digitizing the information? is he qualified enough to work with the range of subjects mentioned here? all in all good initiative but as someone has already said here I wouldn’t rush to monetize the software. put it online as an open source and try to build a community… Read more »

yes that is a very marvelous. But my caution is on the sale of your products pegging at K15, 000. You know nowadays institutions adopt open source access to bring the gap between the rich and poor. we all need information at the same pace and that is why free access is more important in situations like this.

If Malawi can have ten to twenty more people like this hard working, passonate intelligent person, and being able to support them, it will never be the same in ten years coming. Congratuations my teacher of 2012, your class was so awesome and made simple with Padziwe Digital Library. It is really equiped software
