Malawians pray for flood victims
President Peter Mutharika on Sunday led the nation during the Interdenominational Memorial Service of Worship at Robins Park in Blantyre for flood victims in the recent flooding that has displaced over 336 000 and claimed 176 lives.
The Service of worship, held under the theme: “God is Our Refuge and Strength, A very Present Help in Trouble.”
And during the Service of Worship on Sunday, Mutharika partook in the reading of the Holy Scriptures from John Chapter 11 verses 25 to 27 before leading the congregation in observing a minute of silence in honour and memory of the people who have lost their lives to the floods.
The officiating clergy included Reverend Charles Makata of the Evangelical Association of Malawi (ECM), Bishop Emmanuel Kanyama of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) and Sheikh Idrissa Muhamad of the Muslim Association of Malawi (MUM).
Others were Bishop Mark Kambalazaza of the Charismatic Church of Malawi and Right Reverend Bishop Brighton Malasa, chairperson of the Anglican Council in Malawi, among others.
In his speech, Chairperson of Malawi Council of Churches Reverend Alex Maulana noted that Malawians had gone through a tough experience which had a negative bearing on the economy.
Minister of Information, Tourism and Culture Kondwani Nankhumwa read out 49 names of people who lost their lives, particularly from Nsanje and Chikwawa.
Most of those who lost their lives were women and children, and Nankhumwa described it as worrisome for Malawi.
Opposition leaders who were present at the prayers included Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera and former ruling People’s Party vice-president Brown Mpinganjira.
During the prayers, offerings of K632 770 was collected in offerings and presented to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma).

Unity for the good purpose

it was only last month you went to pray to your god for rains, today you’re praying to him/her(especially catholics to mary) to stop the same rains, are you ok in your minds?? didn’t you ask your god for an amount of the rains at the first place?? there are floods, storms etc in America and all over the world, have you ever heard of Obama organising prayers to god?? for what?? this is waste of money, time and energy. the lost resources could have been used for more productive course, eg civic educating citizens on need to take care… Read more »
My understanding was that the prayers were convened to remember those that perished in the floods and not necessarily to pray for God’s intervention on the incessant rains. So before criticizing read and re-read.
