Land-grabbing will continue for as long as we confuse urban multi-party democracy with national democracy. Currently, our political parties represent the interests of the 17% of Malawians who live in towns and cities and work in urban occupations. The vast majority of Malawians – the 83% – who live and work in the rural areas, on the land, have no representation in parliament that is committed to the furtherance of their interests.
