Malawi’s top referee in Germany for course
Malawi’s top Fifa assistant referee Bernadettar Kwimbira Mzika is in Germany attending a course which started on Saturday to tune up for the 2019 France World Cup women’s football.
Kwimbira Mzika, who is decorated referee in Africa has been earmarked for her second consecutive world cup assignment after being shortlisted among 48 officiating panel of whom 16 are in Africa.
The course, which is dubbed Fifa referees Cup, is one of a number of activities the world football governing body has lined up to keep the chosen ones in shape for the world cup.
In an interview the Malawian high flying referee said all was well in the course in Germany.
“I am doing fine and everything is OK by His Grace,” the devoted Catholic, said.
She will be fighting for seven places available to Africa of the 16 selected but her rise in her career make favourite to make the final cut.
Another Malawian great referee Bestor Kalombo, who went to become Confederation of African Football (Caf) referees director applauded his compatriot for scaling greater heights against all odds.
“I have worked with while at Caf she is one of the best not only in Africa,” Kalombo said.
Kwimbira Mzika is a former Malawi’s top sprinter who also played women’s football as well as netball before becoming a referee 12 years ago.
She officiated at her maiden World Cup women’s football tournament in Canada 2015 where she was on a set who handled a third place match between Malawi’s colonial masters England and Germany in which the three Lioness beat Germany 1-0 to grab bronze.
In 2016 she also officiated in the final the gold medal match apart from four consecutive Africa Cup of Nation finals since 2010.
