Man killed during beer fight in Blantyre, 5 suspects arrested – Malawi Police

A 30-year-old man was on  last Sunday killed during a fight that had ensued at one of drinking joints in Chilobwe Township in Blantyre,  Malawi police have confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Martin Thomson of Mphingo village Traditional authority Chanthunya in Balaka district.

Meanwhile, police have arrested five people in connection to the murder. They have arrested Moffat Pinji, 25, Sheppard Chidzalo, 25, 33-year-old Chris Banda, Brighton Phiri 22 years old and Dalitso Pinji 16 years old.

According to police, on the fateful day the deceased was drinking beer with his friends at a Whiskies Gwaza’s before a fierce fight ensued among them.

“On, 22nd January 2017 at around 4pm the deceased was drinking beer with friends at whiskies Gwaza’s bar; whilst there a certain young boy entered the bar started splashing water on the floor in order to sweep but this did not go well with the imbibers, and it ended up with a quarrel between the deceased and his five friends,” explained Blantyre police Publicist, Elizabeth Divala.

“Eventually the fight ensued and the deceased was severely beaten. He managed to run away and the following morning he reported matter to Chilobwe police unit and was given medical report to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where he was treated as an outpatient.”

Divala said the deceased did not report back to police until he was taken back to hospital on Thursday 25th January 17 where he died.

Postmortem results revealed that he died due to loss of blood and assault, leading to the arrest of the five suspects.

I am saddened to hear about this. this young guy used to live as a neighbour across the road and has assisted us in moulding our artificial game including their transportation. MHSRIP
