Man who taught netball in Malawi no more
The man who introduced netball in Malawi in the early 80’s Aston Msukwa has died at the age of 70, relatives have confirmed.
Speaking in an interview on Saturday, Silveria Chalira who is president of women football in Malawi and a relative to the deceased said Msukwa has been ill for some time and he died on Good Friday March 25, 2016 at Mzuzu Central Hospital in Malawi’s Northern city.
“Yes indeed, Msukwa has been ill since January this year. He was several times admitted at Mzuzu Central Hospital for treatment after complaining of general body pains before he died,” said Chalira.
Msukwa was also made sports development officer for Northern Malawi in 1984 and he retired in 2012 as Mzuzu city stadium Manager.
He also held several positions in Malawi football including establishing youth football teams.
Award -winning Malawi National netball team coach Griffin ‘Zagaro’ Saenda who has helped Malawi Queens ranked 5th on world netball said he was shocked to learn the death of Msukwa who helped Malawi netball grow as evidenced by producing world best netball player and athlete Mwawi Kumwenda.
“He taught netball and athletics alongside me at the Kamuzu Institute for sports in, Lilongwe in the early 80’s and we saw the development of netball together and to lose him, it’s very sad story,” said Saenda.
Malawi Netball president Rossy Chinunda said while he has received the news with sadness, she is ignorant of the man’s netball history and could not comment much.
Malawi’s Minister of Youth Sports and Culture Grace  Chiumia expressed shock at the death saying Malawi has lost somebody who was so developmental in Malawi netball.
Sports Development officer for the Northern Malawi Georgina Msowoya said Msukwa was a hard working person who during his time as stadium Manager established many sports disciplines including netball.
Former Northern Region football chairman Peter Chavula said he expected most sports disciplines to be on a holiday to honour the man but was disappointed to see many playing games instead of giving the man their last respects.
Msukwa was laid to rest on Sunday at his home Misuku Hills in Chitipa district near boarder with Tanzania.

I am from the North and I absolutely disagree with the writer on when netball was introduced to Malawi. I played netball for LL Girls Sec school in the mid sixties.

The only indisputable thruth is that Musukwa passed away.
He taught netball in Malawi in the early 80! I don’t know if this has anything to do with introduction of netball in Malawi. It is indeed perfectly true that netball has been there long before Msukwa (mhsrip) started teaching netball in Malawi.
