Mauritius comes to the rescue of Malawi Athletics

Mauritius came to the rescue of Athletics Association of Malawi after providing return air tickets to enable the association athlete Stuart Banda to participate at the World Championship currently underway in Beijing China.

AAM President Godfrey Phiri said after the association failed to secure funding locally it took a begging bowl to Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).

Phiri said the Southern Africa region athletics body sourced an air ticket from the Mauritius government.

“We had tried in vain to get funding locally to enable our athlete travel to Beijing for the World Championship. If failing the Mauritius government through CAA came to our rescue,” Phiri said.

The Athletics body boss applauded Mauritius for the air ticket which he said had helped Malawi to be represented.

He said it would be a shameful for Malawi to fail to send an athlete at the world athletics meeting for lack of funds.

“It would have been embarrassing if we had failed to send an athlete because of money,” Phiri said.

“We are appealing to individual and local companies to consider assisting us whenever we request them to do.”

In a related development the athlete left on Saturday as dark cloud hovered over the possibility of making to the games.

The athlete also left without a coach as the association could not manage to secure an air ticket for both the athlete and coach.

The association is banking on coaches from other CAA countries to help accommodate the athlete.

“We don’t have money to send an athlete and coach and we are hoping that our friends from countries will incorporate him in their training,”  Phiri said.

“This is not the first time we are doing this. We have done that before because of an agreement made within our region.”

The athlete is expected to compete on Wednesday in the 10,000m.

This is putting the country to great shame honestly why not just stay put and not participate at all? So the whole Africa now knows that Malawi is so broke that it can’t sponsor an air ticket for a single athlete?

You stupid people it’s embarassing anyway you look at it. Why go through the preparations and selection process when you knew all along that you don’t have the money to fund for the athletes?? It smells fishy as I have witnessed same before. Nothing strange nothing change. Same old rotten Malawi.

Just stop it. It is shaming the country. What did the govt say to u? If it said no, and other sources within malawi were not forthcoming, then you should have stopped going to other foreign govts begging for money.

We know where this dpp govt priorities are, thieving.
