Minibus drivers, conductors stage violent protests in Blantyre

Minibus drivers and conductors on Thursday conducted violent protests in Blantyre, blocking a road and setting tyres on fire on the road that passes through Kanjedza Police Training School, saying they were angered with the high rate of how their vehicles were impounded by traffic police.

The violent and noisy demonstrations did not last long however as the police acted swiftly and suppressed the protests.

Some of the protesters alleged that the police had impounded over 300 vehicles allegedly for no apparent reason a claim quashed by southern region police spokesperson James Kadadzera.

Kadadzera said the police are doing normal road safety operations to ensure accident free festive season of Christmas and New Year.

He said the traffic police were checking for minibuses which surpassed its capacity, with insurance and COF among other official documents.

And the drivers who violated these laws were booked for different offences and their vehicles were released upon payment of fines.
