Minister Jappie says North Malawi cannot provide president: ‘Let’s join DPP to be in power’
Transport and Public Works minister Jappie Mhango says the northern region cannot produce a President because it has a small population.
He was speaking on Sunday in Luweredzi in Mzimba after officially opening a bridge.
Mhango then urged northerners to join the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), saying the party has an advantage of winning elections because its base, the south, is more populated than other regions.
“Let us face the truth here, the north cannot produce a president. We should just join the DPP which is assured of ruling the country,” he said.
The controversial outspoken minister said federal system of government and rotational of presidency based on regions championed by some sections of people from the north is a non starter.
He said the two systems cannot work in Malawi.
Mhango’s comments come after Mzimba Hora MP Christopher Ngwira proposed that there should be rotational presidency based on regions as a means of equitable development.
Mhango said the DPP led government is distributing development projects equally.

Winston Msowoya and others, I don’t know why you are not understanding Jappie’s statement. He is not saying that northerners should not rule Malawi. What he is saying is that looking at the numbers as we know that politics is a game of numbers, the north can not produce a winning candidate. Every one knows about it deep down our hearts. Does this guy mean DPP cannot chose a Presidential Candidate from any other region but the South. Pitala needs another cabinet reshuffle. Ngini iyi ndi takataka ya dull and has done bad publicity to the party’s internal democratic processes.

Until northners change their mindset,what Jappie said will remain lucid truth. The people who fail northners are politicians from the north including Livingstonia synod. They are in fond of silly suggestions and largely espouse confrontations instead of working to build trust in the minds of people from south and centre.
Let us call a spade by it’s name. Basing our facts on last elections, and if we continue voting based on regions then surely Jappie is right. Last time we voted based on where the leader is coming from. Southern region voted for Peter, Central Region voted for Lazarus only northern region were divided some districts voted more for Peter, some for Joyce Banda because Joyce was married with Richard Banda from the north and eastern region voted for Atupele. I am very sure that this Jappie Mhango smokes and drinks Chamba. Where is the issue of Northerners coming from? Do we need Northerner or Southern President ? Or we need Malawian President? I think this man is mad ( ntchakufuntha).
Based on my analysis democracy favors those who are many for example Tumbuka’s follow family planning which prohibits overpopulation due to high education and merited levels and they also practices organized marriages which promotes favoritism for only those who are rich and those who are not are encouraged to be gays.In southern region there is diverse cultural groups where intercultural marriages is the order of the day due to low levels of education and not merited as you rightly people puts it.
