Nyakamera new PP regional boss, replaces M’balaka

Malawi’s ruling Peoples Party (PP) has appointed  Isaac Nyakamera as its new Southern Province Governor, replacing Ali M’balaka who tendered his resignation on Thursday.

M’balaka, one of the people who helped in the establishment of PP, tendered the resignation letter through his aide at the party’s offices in Blantyre, citing personal reasons.

PP Deputy Publicity Secretary Ken Msonda confirmed Nyakamera’s election by the party’s southern province committee to Nyasa Times on Saturday.

Msonda said it was necessary to immediately fill the position after the resignation of M’balaka, and described Nyakamera as the rightful person for the post.

“Mr. Nyakamera is a person of high integrity in society & a seasoned politician; he commands respect in the political cycle,” said Msonda.

According to media reports, M’balaka succumbed to pressure from the party’s leadership for him to resign or risk being fired on accusation of associating with the opposition.

It is indicated that M’balaka was told to voluntarily relinquish the position following accusation of having links with undisclosed rival opposition party.

But Msonda retaliated what his boss Hophmally Makande’s earlier told the media that M’balaka was not forced to resign but rather had personal reasons to excuse himself from the position.

Makande said there were some possibilities that the party would assign him some other duties.
