Mpasu says Mutharika ‘stop paying lip service’ Malawians are suffering

New Labour Party (NLP)  Sam Mpasu has criticised President Peter Mutharika of paying lip service to the promises of transformational leadership, saying the Malawi populace  is suffering with economic turmoil.

Mpasu: Mutharika is very good at bringing nothing

Mpasu, an economist who served previously as Speaker of Parliament and various cabinet portfolios in the UDF government,  has appealed to Mutharika to seek wisdom from opposition so that the government can alleviate the suffering of Malawiams.

The veteran politician  said some of the country’s problems  like epileptic supply of electricity,  the rate of unemployment among the youth, lack of medicines in hospitals are man-made that could easily be averted.

“If there is a President who is good at talking and very good at bringing nothing, it is our President (Peter Mutharika),” said Mpasu

Mpasu urges  Mutharika’s led government to do something as a matter of urgency to rectify the situation.

“Malawians do not deserve what they are going through right now. There are tremendous social and economic problems that are needless being inflicted on poor Malawians,” he said.

Mpasu said opposition party leaders  wrote President Mutharika seeking to have an audience whereby they listed a lot of problems, their causes and also suggested solutions to the problem.

However, Mutharika has snubbed opposition leaders.

“We are not just criticing for the sake, we want to help our President succeed,” Mpasu said.

Presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani said Mutharika could not meet the opposition on Thurday because of other equally important official engagements.

Kalilani said the President would invite the opposition leaders once he is free.

“He has the letter and he is studying the contents so that he has ready answers when he meets the opposition leaders,” said Kalilani.

President Mutharika has time and again challenged the opposition to come up with alternatives on how best to deal with the critical challenges facing the country, including the dwindling economy.

Information minister Malisen Ndau praised the opposition for dating the President in a bid to find lasting solutions to the country’s problems.

Among other issues, the opposition bloc want immediate address to drug shortage in public hospitals, continued blackouts, dwindling education standards, access to water and other social and economic amenities among other issues.

Mr. Mpasu, you lose me immediately you mention that ‘your intention is to see the president succeed.’ It is Malawi that should succeed in my view, not a single man. I am afraid you are not going to help us either, as you are evidently still very much immersed in praise for leadership.
