MPs bombard health minister over Phalombe Hospital: Kamlepo asks ‘is Phalombe in Malawi?’

Health minister Peter Kumpalume had tough time in parliament when opposition legislatures  from the north and centre took him to task over failure by government to start construction of Phalombe District Hospital.

Lunguzi: Construct Phalombe hospital this year
Lunguzi: Construct Phalombe hospital this year

“Is Phalombe district in Malawi?” asked Rumphi east MP Kamlepo Kalua rhetorically.

He pressed the calm and composed Kumpalume to explain how the government used last year’s K1.8 billion when there was nothing on the ground not even foundation.

Kalua also asked the government how it intends to use the K4 billion for the hospital.

Joining Kalua was Dedza east MP Juliana Lunguzi, who implored the government to construct the hospital this year, saying the situation on the ground was dire.

Members of parliament from Phalombe who all sit on ruling Democratic Progressive Party  (DPP) bench did not make any contribution and conspicuously looked unconcerned.

Kumpalume told the House that the money which was allocated to the hospital last year was used to pay consultants because the norm is that the government could not make tenders for the construction before consultants did their job.

The minister who brought in lighter moments in his responses to calm the otherwise heated atmosphere said the K4 billion which the government has set aside was a contribution as much of the money will come from donors.

Kumpalume said the delay is as a result of the donors decision to refloat tenders but assured the people of Phalombe that the construction would start as soon as a new contractor is identified.

Koma kumeneko, what you should know is that the MPs from the Centre and North have de-campaigned Phalombe MPs and the DPP as a whole because they want the opposition parties to make some inroads in the stronghold of the DPP. It does does not necessarily mean that they are development minded -they are simply playing a political game to gauge the psyche of the people of Phalombe where they know their MPs have taken the electorates there for granted. This is real politics and the opposition have scored a political mileage. When the hospital is constructed they will use… Read more »

Kumpalume has now built so much confidence in handling political issues. This is what most foreigners do. It is only in Malawi that foreigners can actively participate in local politics. Why Kumpaulume is an MP and Minister in Malawi when he holds a British passport only God knows. Our MPs leave a lot to be desired and I wonder if they can enjoy the same opportunities in the UK. If Malawi allowed dual citizenship, I that would not have bothered me, but in the absence of that why for heaven’s sake are the MPs sitting phwii without raising this matter?… Read more »

I am very very much angry with these Mps from my district and I am ashamed to be one of them from Phalombe. How on earth can you just sit mphwii!! in parliament waiting for MPS from Central and Northern region to contribute to your own development. Are you there for DPP or you are there for your people? By the way who sent you in parliament? is it DPP or the people of Phalombe. Mwandikwana bwanji bolanso kuvotela wa standard 8 koma ali ndi umunthu akanatha ku joina debate imeneyo. Musabwelenso kuno mukhale ku Lilongwe komweko….

Foolish and domicile Phalombe MPs must not be voted into power again. So you waited for the opposition to speak on your behalf. This characterises the low thinking ability of the MPs we send to August house. So its all about fear that if you take gvt to task you will not be voted again. Shameful country and shameful politicians. Agalu inu.

My take is that opposition MPs arent regionalistic and with this mindset malawi can develop, DPP should have the whole malawi at heart.

That depends on what the consultants were engaged to do; what they charged for it and whether it was truly done.
