Press Officer for Malawi’s late President Bingu Wa Mutharika, Albert Mungomo is on a collision with parents of late wife, Elizabeth Mungomo due to his inappropriate behavior, Nyasa Times understands.
Mungomo’s departed wife died last week, Friday, after collapsing at the couple’s official residence within the confines of Mtunthama State Lodge in the administrative capital, Lilongwe.
She died soon after arriving home after dropping-off kids in school on that fateful Friday morning.
Family sources that Nyasa Timeshas spoken to have disclosed that despite the news of her demise being relayed to the husband promptly, he only arrived in Lilongwe, Friday night.
When the wife collapsed, Mungomo was in Blantyre on duty where viewing for the body of his late boss and President was taking place.
“For God’s sake the wife died in the morning before 9 am and this was communicated to our in-law instantly. He only arrived in Lilongwe, Friday night,” mourned the in-law.
The slowest drive between Blantyre and Lilongwe would take 5 hours.
It is alleged by the in-laws that they have information that Mungomo may have been enjoying himself in Blantyre with his Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) concubine presenter, Gloria Banda.
Banda divorced her lawfully wedded husband over two years ago in order to stay with another woman’s husband, Albert.
Mungomo, using his powers in State House, has been renting Gloria Banda a Malawi Housing Corporation house at Ngumbe, on the outskirts of the city, Blantyre.
The parents of late Mungomo’s wife believe that their daughter died of heart attack as a result of lack of proper care by Mungomo who was also openly co-habiting with Gloria whenever on duty in Blantyre.
“Although the husband had a good job, our daughter lived a miserable life and continuously complained about Mungomo and the husband snatcher, Gloria,” said another close relation.
Following Mungomo’s delay to arrive from Blantyre, the in-laws decided to take the body of the late Elizabeth from Kamuzu Central Hospital to her aunt’s residence in Area 18 Township in the same city of Lilongwe.
Our information indicates that when he arrived at night in Lilongwe, Mungomo went straight to their residence in Mtunthama where he found fellow State House staff holding a vigil but without the body.
Upon inquiry, he was told that the real vigil was at his in-laws’ residence in Area 18.
The departed woman was laid to rest the following day, Saturday, although tensions appeared to be rising very high between the two sides.
Albert Mungomo has been Press Officer for Mutharika for over two years now.
He was appointed into this position as a reward for his active participation in MBC’s propaganda programme, Makiyolobasi, a brain child of fired MBC Director General, Bright Malopa.
Despite being given the opportunity to showcase himself as a link between State House and the media in Malawi, Mungomo never performed as per expected.
Instead, he helped widen the media gap between the presidency and the journalism fraternity in the country.
Mungomo was well known in State House for victimizing his former MBC workmates, barring some upcoming and hardworking journalists not to reach the confines of State House for coverage of official functions. Other MBC reporters were banned on orders from Mungomo not to travel internationally on duty for no apparent reasons but mare suspicion that they were sympathisers of the then Vice President Joyce Banda.
Apart from failing to perform in his job as Press Officer in State House, he turned himself into an official director of ceremonies for State House functions, a position that does not exist in government structures.
Apart from being the voice behind Makiyolobasi, Mungomo is also well known master of ceremonies at weddings as well as a DJ.
It is not known if he has any back ground in journalism as he worked as a presenter at the state broadcaster.
Hate of Joyce Banda
Information gathered by Nyasa Times indicates that although Mungomo comes from the eastern region district of Zomba just like the current Malawi President Her Excellency Mrs Joyce Banda, the former State House Press Officer was issuing orders to MBC Radio and Television to heavily attack Malawi’s first female Vice President then.
In collaboration with the disgraced former MBC Director General, Mungomo ordered a total black-out coverage on all official activities conducted by Mrs Banda.
Unlike other State House employees who accepted that things changed following Mutharika’s death and swiftly moved in to help the office of the new presidency with other official engagements and hand overs, Mungomo has never been any closer to the current president although she has addressed several official press conferences since taking over power.
Instead, role of coordinating these press conferences has been taken over by spokesperson in her office, Ruth Govati.
When contacted for comment on Thursday afternoon, Mungomo’s mobile phone (number withheld) was answered by a lady who said the owner was still mourning his departed wife and that he could not entertain anyc all from Nyasa Times at this point in time.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
