Mutharika decries ‘moral decay’: Malawi leader urges church to join social media war

Malawi President Peter Mutharika has urged the church to fight against modern vice, the misuse and abuse of social media, saying this is as a result of moral decay.

In addition, the President has told the church, to join the government as intensifies its war against the abductions and killings of people with albinism and human trafficking.

Mutharika said this on Sunday when he presided over the commemoration of the St. Michaels and All Angels Church of Blantyre Synod of the CCAP’s 125 years of existence.

“Some people are using the social media to spread lies, to castigate others for no reason yet we keep quiet. Something is wrong with our society. No society can develop without moral principles,” said Mutharika.

He fell short of saying what action his government will take against those who abuse the social media but two days ago, minister of Information Patricia Kaliati hinted the government was drafting a law to regulate social media.

Mutharika, however, asked the church to take part in ensuring that people do not misuse or abuse the social media.

He also bemoaned the escalation of corruption in the country and said the church can help fight the vice.

On human trafficking, the President said incidents of human trafficking are on the increase in Malawi, saying unsuspecting women are lured and trafficked for promised good jobs outside the country where, to the contrary of their expectations, they are abused and usually end up in sex brothels.

He also condemned the persecution of people with albinism, saying people with albinism are slaughtered like animals and their parts sold like animals.

“You must rise up and speak for the voiceless,” said the President.

In his speech, general secretary of Blantyre Synod Reverend Alex Maulana urged Mutharika not to legalise homosexuality in Malawi no matter pressure he may receive from some quarters.

Maulana also thanked the President for appointing a five member high level delegation that is to meet with the Public Affairs Committee( PAC) to discuss issues of national importance.

He also praised Mutharika for initiating the Green Belt Initiative, saying God could be upset that people blame him for lack of rains yet He gave plenty waters in Lake Malawi that flow freely to Indian Ocean.

The clergy also bemoaned moral decay, saying it was sad that these days people take fun insulting the Head of State.

If I were the president, I would sign death sentences for those that have killed albinos to send a strong message. Why is UN and the west mourning about the killing of albinos and at the same time say we should not hang murderers?

Mr President if you know where you are going you don’t need to stop and throw stones at every dog that is barking, you will waste your time and energy.A good example is President Zuma of RSA he don’t fight with social media because is you can not win. Do the job Malawians gave you or step aside.

What our world currently suffers from is a parenting skills deficit. In Europe, they see it in the immigrants who do not know how to prepare their children for life in their new country. Indeed, the parents often do their best to prevent their children from integrating themselves into their host communities. In Malawi, we have a parenting skills deficit too. For us, the problem is most evident in those who have migrated from the rural areas to the towns and cities. Many people do not know how to prepare their children for honest and honorable success in the city… Read more »

I now believe that we have a bulshit of a president in this country. Last time this man said he did not have any problem “Ndiribe polobolemu”, I took his statement for a joke. This man was serious. He is now asking the church to help solve problems he was employed to do so that next time he should say the church has failed to solve such and such a problem. Koma ndiye mbuzi yeniyeniyi ya presidenti. Mulungu tithandizeni pilizi. Ndikuwona ngati wina munamuchotsa uja bolaniko. Amatiphweteka koma chitukuko nde chimayenda. I chi Nde chanyanya.
