Mutharika rejects rift with Chilima: Malawi President says detractors will ‘fail’

Malawi President Peter Mutharika has said there is no breakdown in the relationship between him and the country’s second in command Saulos Chilima, saying fears on that are “myth”.

Mutharika told state broadcaster MBC in a Talk to the Nation interview program after a question submitted from the public asked the President on the speculations that the Head of State and Vice President have a breakdown in relationship and that Mutharika was grooming foreign minister George Chaponda to succeed him.

But the President said allegations of poor working relations with Chilima were false and unfounded.

He said it was also baseless for some to create many negative stories against the vice president in order to create a rift with his deputy.

“So stories of conflict and disagreement between us are a myth,” said President Mutharika.

Mutharika said speculations may come because of past relationship between the President and vice president.

“I think some people want that to continue,” said Mutharika, adding “they want to create things that do not exist. They want that there should be a fight.”

Mutharika said detractors will “fail”.

“There is no conflict whatsoever between the President and his vice,” maintained Mutharika.

The President said people are fabricating stories between he has good relationship with Chilima who he proudly stated he picked from the private sector other than the political rank and file “to bring in private sector  management style in public administration.”

Said Mutharika: “I also said I was going to assign him [Chilima] the public service reform task so that we can run the civil service like the way they do in the private sector [productive]. So far, that is what he is doing. So whatever people want, I honestly don’t know.”

WE WOULD ONLY AGREE THAT THERE IS NO RIFT IF THE VP WERE TO REFUTE THIS AND NOT THE PRESIDENT.

The fact still remains, Chilima warned APM on taming snakes but APM has done nothing. Chilima championed the reduction of presidential powers on appointments which they promised during campaign period but APM with his snakes can’t have changed tune. Typical of midnight six. Chilima is expecting to take over the presidential mantle in 2019, but APM is grooming one of the snakes. In short, there’s a gap between the president and his vice. They both know it and come 2018 the centre won’t hold and the cracks will be wider. I will repeat this very comment as a reminder. I… Read more »
