Mutharika’s rallying cry as Scorchers prepare for WAFCON final

President Peter Mutharika delivered an emotional tribute to the Scorchers today, declaring the Malawi Women’s football team have united the nation in a way politics never managed — as the whole country holds its breath ahead of their history-making final.

Fresh off the plane from South Africa, a beaming Mutharika couldn’t hide his pride as he spoke of the extraordinary wave of togetherness sweeping the nation thanks to the Scorchers’ remarkable run.

“The Scorchers have managed to achieve something that we politicians have never been able to do and that is; they have managed to unite this country,” the President declared.

And in a heartfelt show of support ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster clash, Mutharika revealed he and the First Lady would be praying for the team every step of the way.

“The First Lady and myself wish the Scorchers well tomorrow! We are praying for them,” he said.

“Football is a good example of selflessness and collectivity, that you work together and if you have a ball and you want to win you give the person who can make you win!

“No selfishness but team-spirit and that’s what we need in this country and I hope we can learn from that,” he said.
