Mwawi back to Malawi Queens fold ahead of England series

Australia-based Malawian netball super star  Mwawi Kumwenda is returning to national team squad as the Queens launch preparations for  a three-match international series against England later this month.

Mwai: Back in Malawi Queens set-up

Kumwenda’s manager Hlupikire Chalamba has confirmed the star would  join camp following Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) assuarance of to resolve the impasse .

The lanky goal shooter (GS) was recently expelled from the Queens squad for reporting late at training camp ahead of the Fast5 World Netball series in Australia where they lost miserably.

“Mwawi is set to join national team camp on Tuesday after a meeting with Netball Association of Malawi president Khungikile Matiya,” Chalamba, who is a lawyer, said.

“NAM has assured that they will create  a conducive environment for Mwawi and her team mates,” she added.

The development comes after a scathing letter that she wrote NAM on Thursday last week outlining conditions that would enable Mwawi to join camp.

Writing in one of Malawi’s dailies a columnist argued that Chalamba was wrong to set conditions.

“While NAM has been blamed for its lack of courtesy and decorum when dealing with disciplinary issues, Mwawi’s manager setting conditions before the player reports for Queens camp in preparation for test series to say the least is unfortunate.”

Mwawi’s manager should have led by example by discreetly initiating the meeting with (NAM) while the player is in camp.”

Kumwenda said he was “delighted” to do national duties again.

The Malawi Queens star, who signed a two-year deal with Vixens, said she is ready to fire the team during the three-games against England.

Some of the notable names in the squad include Blue Eagles centre Takondwa Lwazi, Joyce Mvula, Carol Ngwira, Laureen Ngwira and Joana Kachilika.

The Copper Box Arena in London will play host to the first two games of the 2017 series with England and Malawi going head-to-head for the first time on Friday 24th November at 7.45pm before meeting again just two days later on Sunday 26th November at 2pm.

Both sides then move to the Genting Arena in Birmingham for the third and final game, which will take place on Wednesday 29th November at 7:45pm.
