Just four minutes into the game, Lazarus Deco Nyemera’s free kick from the left, found Wakisa Mwenengube whose powerful header beat Red Lions goalie Clement Mlomba for the Green Intellectuals to lead one nil.

The Lions could cancel the lead in the 12th minute when Innocent Bokosi beat an offside trap to face Mzuni goalkeeper one-on-one, but his shot was well read and blocked for a corner.

Bokosi was on the ball again in the 20th minute when goalkeeper Chimwemwe Kumkwawa for Mzuni, again stopped his shot, but Kumbukani Mwambene was on time to tap the rebound into the net for the lions; 1-1.

Six minutes later, the students went forward with a fierce counter attack. Hudson Milanzi chested down a Deco Nyemera curved cross but he was very unlucky with his powerful right footer which hit the upright.

The two teams went for a recess with the scoreboard still reading 1-1.

Three minutes into the second half, it was the lions’ substitute Patrick Luhanga who wasted a golden a chance when he, alone in front of goal, completely missed the ball with his right foot.

The game then became physical and scrappy for the rest of the second half until referee Alfred Aziz Nyirenda blew the final whistle.

Speaking after the match, Red Lions coach Mike Kumanga said the game was tough and collecting a point was not that bad for his side.

“We created chances but failed to utilize them. Again, this pitch is so bumpy and my players were failing to play their normal game,” explained Kumanga.

Head coach for Mzuni FC, Alex Ngwira, also said it was a difficult game.

“Lions were mostly using high balls and were very physical, a situation that my players were somehow failing to cope up with. We are not disappointed with the point that we have bagged. The season is still on and we are aiming at finishing the season in the top eight,” remarked Ngwira.

The draw leaves Mzuni with 8 points from four games and still on top of the log at the time of posting the story.
