Nkhatabay  shop worker arrested for stealing goods worth K900 000

Malawi Police in Nkhata Bay District on Saturday aborted plans by an 18-year-old shop worker to steal goods worth over K900 000 ($1,800) from the shop he was working in.

The police arrived on the scene after being tipped by a minibus driver who was hired to ferry the stolen items.

Nkhata Bay Police publicist, Sergeant Ignatius Esau identified the suspect as Blessings Kaonga from Bwanaoko Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nthalire in Chitipa District.

Esau said the suspect was employed as a shop worker in a dressing outfit belonging to Thokozani Mfune at Nkhata Bay Boma.

“Barely a week after being employed at the shop, on Saturday, Kaonga went to the shop at night where he managed to enter and stole various property ranging from a Plasma screen, blankets, baby blankets, pairs of shoes and various clothes among others all valued at K933 000,” said Esau.

Police said after managing to steal from the shop, the suspect hired a minibus to ferry the property to Mzuzu.

The hired driver suspected foul play and reported the matter to police who arrested the shopkeeper. —Reporting by Wisdom Ngwira, Mana
