Nomads conquer central region to go top: Malawi TNM Super League

Ex-Civil Service United (Civo) striker Jabulani Linje Sunday, May 17, 2015 brought misery into his former camp when he struck for visiting Mighty Be Forward Wanderers two minutes to time to hand the Nomads a hard-earned 1-0 victory against the struggling servants in a TNM Super League thriller played before a huge crowd at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Featuring the bulk of their new acquisitions- Muhamed Suluma, Malumbo Gondwe, Isaac Kaliati, Linje and man-of-the-moment Cameroonian Lionel Asu, the Nomads had it tough against a determined Civo side searching for a first goal and first win in the 2015 league season but it was Linje who drew a line between the men and boys in the dying minutes.

The former servant pounced on a loose ball just outside Civo’s 18-yard box and hammered the ball first time to beat goalkeeper Duncan Mkandawire.

Wanderers coach Elia Kananji was all smiles after the game, saluting his charges for withstanding the strugglers’ onslaught.

“Having gone four games without a win, Civo really wanted to get something out of this game.

“They gave us a torrid time from the start up to the very end but thanks to the boys for withstanding the heat and getting the result,” said Kananji, who had to pull out the previous day’s two-goal hero Asu for Rafik Mussa towards the end.

A clearly disillusioned Civo United coach Oscar Kaunda declined to grant any interview to the press.

The victory capped a successful tour of central region for the Nomads, who have had it tough away in the region during the previous seasons.

With the Sunday result, the Nomads have now climbed to the top of the table, displacing Mafco, whom they beat 2-1 at the dreaded Chitowe Stadium on Saturday.

They have 13 points from five games, a point ahead of the soldiers, who have played six games.
