Nomads limp again, KB dampen Eagles title hopes: Malawi TNM Super League
Lilongwe is becoming a difficult hunting ground from Mighty ‘Nyerere’ Wanderers, who have just managed a single point out of the maximum si in two TNM Super League assignments against Epac FC and defending champions Silver Strikers.
The Nomads were on Saturday held 0-0 by Epac in a dull match played at Civo Stadium, where the only highlight was the sending off of Epac’s Kelvin Nthotho. Lilongwe based referee Zondwayo Siwombo red-carded the Epac midfielder after he had fouled and assaulted Wanderers’ Mike Kaziputa, who was also booked for retaliation.
At Silver on Sunday, Nyerere were just unlucky to concede a late goal after a splendid second half performance.
The first half belonged to the Bankers, who missed a couple of chances including Ndaziona Chatsalira’s effort which crashed against the bar.
Came the second half, Wanderers took full control but were betrayed by their striking force, which failed to convert some easy scoring opportunities. Their best chance of the game came on 54 minutes but striker Mapopa Kaunda shot over the cross-bar with only Silver goalkeeper Blessings Kamiza to beat.
The Nomads were to pay for their second half misses three minutes to time when substitute Sam Gunda tapped in a cross from another substitute Lazarus ‘Deco’ Nyemera.
Wanderers coach Kannock ‘Bruno’ Munde was clearly disappointed with the result after the whistle.
“It’s very painful to concede a goal in the last moments after playing so well. We were supposed to get one or
two goals in the second half but we missed our chances. We have to win our remain three games to improve our standing on the log table,” said Munde.
His counterpart Stain Chirwa described the game as tough: “It was a 50-50 game and anybody could have won it. Wanderers are a good side and you saw how they played the second half. They played a different game today compared to yesterday but we expected it.
“I’m happy we have got the full points and our target now is to finish in the top four. Should we finish 13 points below the
would-be-champions, we will consider ourselves as champions but if the gap between us and the league winners will be more than 13 points, we will say congratulations to them,” said Chirwa.
With the win, Silver have now dislodged Azam Tigers on the sixth position with 37 points from 24 games. Tigers also have 37 from the same number of games but they have an inferior goal-difference compared to the bankers.
Wanderers have been dislodged on the ninth position by Kamuzu Barracks, who have beaten Blue Eagles in Dedza. KB now occupy the ninth position with 29 points from 23 three games, a point ahead of the Nomads who have played 25 games.
KB dampened Blue Eagles’ TNM Super League title ambitions after beating them 1-0 at Dedza Stadium in the Central Region on Sunday afternoon as the cops stayed nine points behind leaders Big Bullets.
Ziyani Yona’s goal for Kamuzu Barracks had the Eagles stuck on third with 43 points from 24 games on the 15-member log table, followed by second-placed Moyale Barracks’ 47 points (24 games). The Bullets have 53 points from 25 matches. Barracks are 10th on 30 points.
Dalitso Sailesi, Jaffalie Chande and Frazer Menyani kept the Bullets on top after a 3-1 win over bottom-placed Karonga United at the Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday. Jimmy Bingo netted Karonga’s face saver.
