Nomads lose to Civo, title bid meltdown: Malawi TNM Super League
Mighty Be Forward Wanderers coach Elijah Kananji insisted he was not happy with his team performance, but will not blame his players after the 1-0 defeat to Civo United in the TNM Super League on Sunday diminishing their chances to claim the title.
Isaac Msisya shocked the Nomads at Kamuzu Stadium in the 37th minute as he produced the only goal of the match to the satisfaction of Big Bullets ganyu fans, who drummed up support to the visitors in the entire game.
Kananji maintained they would not feel the pressure.
He told Nyasa Times after the game: “We cannot blame the players because l feel it was just another bad day in office . We played against Mafco in the middle of the week, and l feel fatique also played part in today’s loss.
“The only message to my players is that we have to cope with it because we are still in the Standard Bank Cup contention . It’s easy to say and I agree completely, but results are too bad.
Back in the field of play, the Nomads kicked-off the game on a promising note, as they kept Civo United on the tight rope.
The Nomads were coming wave after wave, but their striking force which was led by Victor Nyirenda was too wasteful.
On two occasions, Nyirenda failed to convert the ball inside the net with a yawning goal to the dissatisfaction of thousands of Nomads fans, who came in their large numbers.
The Nomads also miss-used a scoring opportunity in the 39th minute, when Nyirenda’s shot cannoned off the post.
The Nomads also struggled on the middle of the park, where Rafiq Mussa was outplayed by the visitors. Civo resorted into a physical game giving the Nomads a tough time.
The Civil Servants where also brilliant in defence with John Lanjesi and Emmanuel Zoya commanding the proceedings of the game.
Come second half, the Nomads introduced Muhammad Sulumba, who struggled due to lack of fitness. Sulumba straight from South Africa only trained for a day before being featured on Sunday.
Wanderers team manager Steve Madeira said: “Everyone did well but up front we could not score that chance we got.”
Civo United coach Oscar Kaunda said he was “very happy” with the win and collecting maximum points on their Blantyre tour this weekend after beating Fisd Wizards on Saturday.
“The first half was 50-50, an open game, but we dominated the second half. I’m very pleased for our first six points away. We played a high tempo from the beginning.
“I am very happy with Victor Mpinganjira, he played really well. He is a good player for us.”
Mpinganjira is on loan from Wanderers.
