‘Northern Block’ to engage citizens of North Malawi

Northern Region MPs Caucus, a grouping of members of Parliament (MPs) in Northern Malawi who have formed a grouping to push for fair share of the national cake, says it will be meeting chiefs and  individuals in the region for talks.

Kamlepo Kalua: We are goin to engage the people

The caucus is arguing that the northern region is sidelined in terms of development projects.

Leader of the group,  Kamlepo Kalua who is also  Rumphi East MP (People’s Party-PP) and a fierce critic of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration, told Nyasa Times that the meetings want to get peoples input as they are about to come up with a constitution.

“We want the group to be strong that is why we are delaying to hold our news conference but the northerners as well as Malawians should expect it soon,” said Kamlepo.

He said government is planning to frustrate the group, citing comments by  Rumphi North MP Jappie Mhango, who is also DPP campaign director and Minister of Transport and Public Infrastructure, braning the  grouping as “vinthu vyambula mahala [senseless things]”.

Kalua said: “We know that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is against our group and plan but we will not be stopped.”

He defiantly said they are “ bootlickers” but  they will fight for the interest of the people in the region.

Kalua said the grouping wants to push for construction of roads, public universities, health facilities, secondary and primary schools, abolishment of quota system of selecting students to public institutions of higher learning and other social developments that have to benefit the region.

Some of the group members include Karonga Central MP Frank Mwenifumbo (independent), who is the group’s interim secretary general, Mzimba North legislator Agnes Nyalonje (PP) is spokespersom,  Mzimba Hora MP Christopher Mzomera Ngwira is organising secretary while Alliance for Democracy (Aford) president Enoch Chihana, who is Rumphi Central MP, is a member of the caucus.

I as a Malawian totally disagree with what fellow Malawians in the north are doing,,,,,,,I think government must screen carefully the agenda of such frustrated groupings before being accepted into the system. how can a law maker who is suppose to be a champion of governance and unity for our country be in fore front dividing the nation…….., what does our constitution say about the sovereignty of Malawi as nation. there is no northern bloc in Malawi s constitution….. why dividing people….. let’s unit as Malawi to oppose such insane of northern bloc. its senseless.,,,, even chihana had an idea… Read more »

We are happy, happy, happy – this tells a big story now, mwathedwa nzeru. Go back home and start developing it. How can you expect me from Centre to develop North? – it does not work like that. For your information, government will only bring development to an area which has people staying there. In your case, you all moved to here in the centre and south for reasons better known by yourselves. So, the equation is simple – go back home and the government will follow you there. Most of you from the North are settled in the centre… Read more »

We have been marginalised for quiet long and not even enjoying the democracy that our father Tom Chihana fought for us.Malawi should be portioned….five presidents
have ruled Malawi since independence and none from the north.West African
countries in 80s and 90s used to fight oppression governments,we can borrow a leaf from west Africa.

Vyalema, that tells you a story – you are BAD PEOPLE – kudzikonda. Ask yourselves why that has been the case. Mulibe khalidwe – simudziwa kukhala bwino ndi anzanu and we from the Centre and South discovered this in you. This is why late Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda directed that all Civil Servants from the North that were working in the other two regions should go back and work at home. Simunati mukhaula – ifenso from Centre and South tili mkati kupangana za inu – kungoti we do not want to make so much noise as you do. Musinthe khalidwe… Read more »
