Nyamilandu dynasty challenged at Football Association of Malawi

Mac Millan Walter Nyimlandu is facing a vote of no confidence as more credible candidates have emerged to challenge his fourth term bid in the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) presidential elections to be held on December 18.

Joining the race are renowned banker Wilkins Mijiga, golfer and prominent private practice lawyer John Gift Mwakhwawa. Others include Allie Mwachande, Chikwawa United chairperson Owen Chomanika Owen Chomanika, Kelvin Mmangisa and goalkeeper legend Boniface Maganga who have already indicated their aspirations to contest for the FAM hot seat.

Former footballers and administrators Henry Kaka Chibowa and Alick Tahuna have only been approached to stand.

Nyamilandu, who is seeking a fourth term, remains the firm favourite for the role as he has backing from the affiliates who are the voters.

He however faces resistance from the football fraternity not to elongate his stay at FAM hence the emergence of more credible people to run the soccer governing body.

“I have something to offer to the soccer fraternity,” said Mijiga who is credited to have assisted Nyamilandu set up the FAM Cup which later changed to Standard Bank Knockout Cup after the bank took over funding of the competition.

Makhwawa who said he has been involved in football “in the background” is challenging Nyamilandu dynasty at FAM

“I am just fed up that a country of around 15 million people should only have one person managing football for more than three terms.

“If he had achieved what he wanted, he would have stepped down. By clinging to power it just shows that he is yet to achieve what he wanted,” said Makhwawa as quoted in the press.

Candidates are required to serve mainstream football in any capacity for at least five years going into an election.

My concern with Walter isn’t that he’s a bad man or that he has failed; we can only achieve as much as we have been supported. Walter is educated; Walter has nothing to lose. Let him set an example that leadership requires that at some material time you should know it’s time to leave the dinner table, that others be given an opportunity & you take another honourable role. We shall need him in other circles, definitely. We who are younger should teach our politicians we can leave a seat & still remain respected & contribute with our experience for… Read more »

Nyamilandu will have the incumbency advantage. To say that since there will be competition, therefore he should be allowed is not fair. Why did you refuse Muluzi an open term?

If Nyamilandu clings to the power for the mere FAM president, can you remove this guy if he was made State President? Too bad for people who claim to be educated.

Mwasowa chokamba apa. Walter made it clear, way back that he is not contesting again despite calls and assurances from football affiliates to vote him into power. He is a real man. I believe this article has been written with an intent to persuade Walter to reverse his decision. please leave him alone. He has done his part and the football (FAM) affiliates know that
