Nyasa Times journo scoops 2015 Haller Prize for development Journalism
A Malawian Investigative Journalist, Collins Mtika has emerged the 2015 overall winner for Haller Development Journalism Prize, carting away with MK2.6 million, a prize that aims to encourage closer scrutiny and wider exposure of crucial development issues in Africa.
The Haller Foundation’sethos has always been to share knowledge and ideas to achieve economic development, and this same ethos was behind the launch of the Haller Prize for Development Journalism in 2014.
“To date, much of the writing about these sectors has been from outsiders looking in. The Haller Prize seeks to encourage all African writers to investigate important development issues, encourage debate, propose solutions and, above all, foster accountability and transparency in all aspects of development,” the Haller Foundation said.
The winner of the 2015 Haller Prize for Development Journalism and recipient of GBP3000 is Collins Mtika from Malawi, for his article “My mobile, my inputs, my market”- ICT set to reform Malawi’s agriculture’.
The 2nd Prize of GBP1000 was awarded to Israel Bionyi Nyoh from Cameroon, for‘Funds for aid projects: charity or business?’
The 3rd Prize of GBP500 was awarded to Bob Koigi from Kenya, for his article ‘Drama grows yields an act at a time’.
The Chairman of the Judges Special Award of GBP100 was given to Kolawole Talabi, from Nigeria, for his very entertaining article about Nollywood.
Collins is a Malawian Investigative Journalist and founder of the Centre for Investigative Journalism in Malawi (CIJM). He heads the Investigations desk at Malawi’s Nyasa Times onloine publication and is also the Malawi Correspondent for the South African based Mail & Guardian newspaper and a flagship pan African weekly newspaper called, African Independent.
He has been a journalist since 2003 and has worked for Malawi’s biggest newspaper group, Blantyre Newspapers Limited, whose publications include The Daily Times, Sunday Times, Malawi News and The weekend Times.
Mtika is passionate about promoting effective, ethical and original reporting.

@1 5Ws and H is still a valid formula for writing news stories. The formula assists journalists to be ethical in their reporting. It removes bias. Also know that articles are written in different styles.
I am inspired by the achievement. From Collins award, I perceive that to be the best is possible. Our sincerity at what we do and our ability therein cannot be hidden. This is at African level!
