To be a Board Chair does not necessarily entail that someone must have prior experience in that field. He/She is supposed to give strategic direction and build a strong board team which will have oversight function over the Executive-which is the technical branch of any organisation. Do you expect any Minister of Health to have a medical background?? As I am not sure of the outcome of the interviews but in case he is successful I wish Dr Rev Maulana all the best.
He is my pastor and I don’t consider it right to comment. But, you are saying a person who has no communication background can provide “strategic” direction to a “communications” hub that MACRA has become in Malawi!?

Bwana chilewani-It is this myopic thinking that has brought us to where we are as a country. The third least developed country in the world. Where our people are dying in hospitals because of lack of medication and doctors and our head of state is asking for vehicles for the police- instead of asking for more doctors and medicine that will benefit the masses. This weird thinking must stop if things are going to change.Why do people specialize and have professions? It is to give the best they have been trained in for maximum impact and results.

Being a such a lucrative organization that sits on a lot of cash, the President should have sought ten names to be interviewed. I don’t see any value added of bringing a reverend to run such a strategic and vital institution.
The bible says that our people perish for lack of knowledge. For one to provide strategic direction, you should understand the subject matter and decipher a solution that makes sense. For example, myself as an engineer, what strategic direction can I provide to a doctor operating a patients leg?Effective strategic direction improves an organizations ability to perform in planning by providing the information needed to make appropriate investment and development choices. Thanks for your views Panganani, we see things differently and that’s how the world generally operates. Technocrats are at the Executive helm and so called brutes are at the Board level. Sometimes you bring in a profession in that field to be at the board level you find the organisation going downhill. Strategic direction calls for building a strong board team with people from various backgrounds and sharing constructive Board decisions to move any organisation forward. I rest my case and let’s agree to disagree.
Zili ngati unduna izi, no need for related experience or qualification (my thoughts). Zitsanzo zili mbwe padziko lapansi. In Europe, they prefer holders of Engineering degrees to be CEOs, in America, they prefer holders of Business or operations Management degrees, while in the East, they go for Marketers or ICT gurus. Perhaps we should ask what is our own preference for CEOs and related positions? Does that preference impact the performance of our parastatals and/ or SMEs?
