Petra announces convention dates

The opposition People’s Transformation Party (Petra) says it will hold its convention on from 3 to 4 January at the Malawi Posts Corporation conference hall in the commercial capital Blantyre.

Making the announcement during a news conference Friday evening at the party’s secretariat in Blantyre, the party’s president Kamuzu Chibambo said all the positions will be contested for at the event which is budgeted at K10 million.

“This is a greater component of democracy. We feel that leaders should be duly elected not impose themselves on people,”   he said adding that this will be the third convention for the party since 2004 polls.

Chibambo who said will content for the party’s president ruled out a possibly of forming a coalition with other political parties in the run up to 2014 polls saying the party had declined such calls in the past.

“Several political parties including Democratic Progressive Party and the ruling People’s Party have been approaching us to join them but we declined because we have our own obligation to Malawians which might be deferent from them,” he said.

Chibambo said  the party is currently working towards the possibility of fielding candidates in all the constituencies and wards to contest as the party’s parliamentarians and councillors during the 2014 polls .
