Police reconfiscate Alliance One official’s passport

Malawi Police have reconfiscated a passport belonging to an Alliance One Tobacco Limited official who was arrested for being in possession of cannabis sativa, localy known as chamba, without permission.

Bester: On bail

The official, Regional Procurement Officer  Colonelius Daniel Bester was arrested by Lingadzi Police weeks ago after he was found cultivating and possessing cannabis sativa at his compound in Area 10.

However, questions were raised in the manner which the police granted the suspect bail and have his passport given back before allowing him to leave the country for Zimbabwe without any court appearance.

Officers at Police Headquarters who opted for anonymity said following investigations, Bester’s passport was reconfiscated upon his arrival in the country.

“However, his release from custody without proper procedures is being investigated,” said the source adding that the suspect is yet to appear before the court.

According to a report by Assistant Supretendant Kamphandira of national police headquarters drug section which Nyasa Times has seen, the stalks of chamba are yet to be examined.
