Police record 11 deaths in New Year’s accidents

Malawi Police Services has recorded 11 deaths in 16 accidents on New Year eve and January 1, 2019, an increase of 75 per cent up from last year’s figures.

Road traffic accidents in the country sharply increased

Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said most of the accidents were as a result of reckless driving and over speeding.

“We recorded 186 cases of over-speeding and 18 cases of driving under alcohol,” he said.

He said same time last year, the police recorded one death and four accidents.

Social commentator Emily MKamanga attributed the rise in the deaths and accidents due to bad roads and corruption.

“There are a lot of potholes on our roads. Drivers also easily corrupt traffic police when they have unroadworthy vehicles or they do not have valid driving licences,” she said.

The police say they will work hard to ensure that the accidents rate go down in 2019.
