Poly students protest holiday extension: Seeks President’s intervention
Students at the Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi are asking the institution’s management to stop what they call the unreasonable extension of their holidays.
President of the Polytechnic Students Union Jaston Bulaula told Nyasa Times that the students are deeply concerned with the current move taken by the institution’s management to extend their holiday to 5th January.
“The latest holiday started on 31st October and was supposed to end on 7th December. But it has been extended to 5th January, making us stay at home for 2 months instead of 5 weeks as per the academic calendar,” he says.
Bulaula adds that this is not the only holiday being extended. “The last academic year lasted for 16 months (from March 2013 to June 2014) instead of the normal 12 months. Surprisingly, when we as for reason why they extend the holidays, no proper explanations are given and only poly is experiencing this in UNIMA.”
He says end of year holidays in other institutions like Kamuzu Nursing College last for 3 to 4 weeks only as opposed to 4 months at the Polytechnic.
He says the extended holidays has resulted into 5 years programs being done in 7 or 8 years “which is delaying us from contributing to the development of this country”.
“So what we want is for the Poly management to reverse its decision on extending the current holiday. We also want government to explain why only Poly has no fixed calendar despite having a demonstration free academic year.
“We want the chancellor who is the president to intervene on this matter so that poly students spend more time in school and not at home,” he says.

Poly should be the last guys to complain. You elongate your holidays willfully by strikes, this is why a 5 year course is done in 7 years. The KCN students are serious no joke about it. They deal with life and never will you hear them congregating into the roads simply to announce thei anger.
Mau koma amenewo, they are forgetting that they spend most of their days in the streets!!!
Stay at home kaye for sometime. Enjoy the time with your relatives, limani nawo. The President should not be dragged into such a trivial matter. Zoona holiday yonweyi mpaka a President.
Poly students are a big sham. They love binge-drinking and mostly wonder-around Blantyre City fucking mahule. They are fools in making. Prof Peter has no time to talk to idiots like you. Most students are very rude. Go hang! This college must be closed down. My tax money should not be wasted by these mbuzi.
This is pathetic, holiday mpaka 18months, kungomva kuti ndi za boma, ana mpaka kukalambira konko.
Ngati ntchito yakuvutani, bwanji mukapedze chochita china.Chonde musatisokonezere Poly yathu.Dont you know that we are still paying house rents during such unnecessary holidays? pliz reverse this!
I find it funny that Polytechnic compares itself to KCN or COM where holidays are just about 4 weeks long. Poly is way different from COM/KCN. There are serious classes going on at COM nd KCN…as for Poly, continue drinking beer! You do not need a 4week long holiday, you need an 18week long holiday!
