Polygamous man commits suicide in after quarreling with second wife

A polygamous man at Mtema Village, Traditional Authority Njewa in Lilongwe has committed suicide after picking a quarrel with his first wife.

Males tend to use more violent suicide methods such as hanging.

The man identified as Francisco Nomani, had two wives .

Lilongwe Police Station assistant spokesperson Sergeant Alice Sitima said the incident occurred aroubd midnight on November 22, 2020 at Buli graveyard in Mtema Village.

He was later found hanging in a tree at the graveyard,” she said.

Police officers from Chitedze Police Unit in the company of medical personnel visited the scene.

“Postmortem results showed that death was due to suffocation.,” said sitima.

Nomani hailed from Ntema Village, TA Njewa in Lilongwe district.

Last month  a UK-based Malawian mental health research group and charity organisation, MentalCare, noted that  Malawi is seeing a sharp rise in suicide rates this year.

MentalCare executive director Gerald Namwaza-Banda said: “People with mental health problems are so vulnerable and at high risk to commit suicide.”

Meanwhile, Police have appealed to members of the public to avoid taking their own lives over family wrangles but rather seek guidance and counselling from relevant authorities.
