Ryan will replace Bishop Joseph Mukasa Zuza who died in a tragic road accident around Thungwa area in Mzuzu on January 15, 2015.

Mzuzu Diocese has since the demise of Zuza been led by apostolic administrator Monsignor Michael Mughogho.

On Tuesday several priests from both the dioceses of Mzuzu and Karonga took to the social media to announce the news.

Bishop Mtumbuka of Karonga Diocese secretary Father Joseph Sikwese wrote: “The Very Reverend Professor John Ryan appointed bishop-elect of Mzuzu Diocese.”

Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM)  secretary general Fr Henry Saindi confirmed the appointement of  Ryan, who has been  a professor in coding theory at Mzuzu University and comes from Ireland. He  belongs to the Society of Patrick – also known as the St Patrick’s Missionary Society.

He came to Malawi around the seventies and has worked in many parishes of then Mzuzu Diocese, St. Patrick’s Seminary in Rumphi before joining Mzuzu University.

He was ordained a priest on June 18, 1978.

Since his ordination he has served the following academic and pastoral roles: 1978-2005: St. Paul’s Parish in Mzimba (Mzuzu); St. Stephan’s in Kapuro (Mzuzu); St. Mathias’ Parish in Misuku (Mzuzu) and head teacher at Community Day Secondary School in Misuku (Mzuzu); head at the minor Seminary of St. Patrick in Rumphi (Mzuzu); taught mathematics in Ireland; 2005-2011: Chaplain of the Sisters of the Holy Rosary in Katete; since 2000: Chaplain and professor of mathematics at the University of Mzuzu, Assistant in St. Augustine parish and associated outstations; Member of the College of Consultors.

Karonga Diocese came from Mzuzu Diocese and is headed by a Dr. (by the name Dr. Martin Mtumbuka) and now Mzuzu Diocese the father of Karonga Diocese is headed by Professor. Any way this is not about Education but to lead the Diocese through God’s guidance. May the Almighty God bless Prof Ryan, and the whole Catholic Church.
