Malawians, especially those who have gone to school should be the last to discredit our culture. In every culture food plays an important part of life just like any other activity in life. Have we ever wondered why citizens from the Western would welcome you with a cup of tea or coffee or why those from the East mostly eat rice?

I would suggest we talk good of our own culture be it nsima or any other aspect of life in this country.

School , Ambuje, is letting us know that white refined flower, whether its maize or wheat, is not healthy. It is linked to the rise in obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases that are fast becoming the scourge of developing nations. It is time to temper our proud traditions with a little knowledge. Mgaiwa is excellent food. Millet, sorghum etc are highly coveted in western cultures now because of their high nutritional value.

Thumbs up ZIGGY! It’s an open secret western culture and traditions footprint in Malawi and let alone the rest of Africa is roughly 60% now. We can not move forward and accomplish worthwhile development if we continue with the same approach to life we have doing since 1964. Bob Marley, Peter Tosh et al, tried their best to have our eyes opened and look within. Slavery continues on the side lines until Jesus’s Christ comes again! Let’s accept it.

The learned lawyer is right here. Ine kwathu for so many days, we miss nsima and eat whatever is available (tea with mbatata, phala la mpunga, etc) and my family members have started enjoying it. This year we have drought, but other agricultural produce will be harvested, but most worrying is maize hasn’t done good in the field. We indeed need to change on the way we look at things.
“Chakudya si nsima yokha amangwetu” said former Head of State Dr Bakili Eleson Muluzi-2002.
