Resign or seek a job elsewhere, Goodal tells civil servants seeking salary increase
Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe has said the government has no money to effect a salary increase for civil servants, telling those seeking the pay rise to resign and seek a job elsewhere.
Gonndwe said this on Tuesday when he presided over the opening of Managing for Development Results workshop in Lilongwe.
“Those who want money should look for a job elsewhere or start business,” he said.
He asked civil servants to look at their job as a calling which does not offer satisfactory financial rewards but serve people.
“The government will not be able to raise salaries for civil servants,” he said.
The IMF says Malawi has a bloated civil service with a staggering wage bill which is choking other social services but the Civil Service Trade Unions say half of those working in government are public officers appointed by President Peter Mutharika.

Lessons from Rwanda: No government vehicle for any public officer be it PS or Director. Instead government just acts as guarantor for a vehicle loan to any civil servant who wants to buy a vehicle. Every civil servant with a car drives alone or if they employ a driver, it is their own responsibility for his salary and everything. In this way, government has reduced its wage bill by eliminating drivers and vehicle operation costs. Koma kwathu kuno, a PS has 3 government vehicles (1 for office, 1 for domestic errands used by maids, and 1 for children to and… Read more »
The whole DPP crew has failed. The Finance minister is the biggest failure in bringing back the economy of Malawi. If the Minister wants some advice, ask Chikaonda to help. My advice is; stop the useless FISP programme which is draining billions of Kwachas. I know why the FISP favoured by these leaders. It is because these is a loop hole still some money. No one checks the balances there except the Finance Minister.

The sign of a well qualified person is marketability globally. During colonial era, Nyasa’s were sought after in the whole of Southern Africa, that is why we had the likes of Kaunda governing Zambia, Mugabe governing Zimbabwe, Kadali setting up ANC. The history of Africa is littered with Nyasa’s doing good work all over. We then moved on to Europe, USA, as evidenced by these places allowing Malawians to go without visas until recently. Now we have a crop of Malawians who no one wants to hire, even their own country, why because they are lazy and good for nothing,… Read more »
Its a shame for DPP government to talk like that have you forgotten already what you promised the people is this what you call reformation system? If it is like that you better to control the price of the commodities on market, otherwise what you are saying is an insult to us civil servants.
Before making such statements, you also need to consider how your employees will feel. And how will controlling officers work with the people you are demeaning? Why make the majority suffer for a cause that you do not even deem important?
