Search for Queen’s Young Leaders opens to Malawi

Following the huge success of this year’s inaugural Queen’s Young Leaders Awards at Buckingham Palace in June, the search is on to find the next 60 exceptional young people from across the Commonwealth to become the Queen’s Young Leaders of 2016.

If you, or someone you know, is doing inspirational work in their community, apply or nominate them for an Award today.

The Queen’s Young Leaders Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of young people aged 18-29 who are taking the lead to transform the lives of others and make a lasting difference in their communities. The Programme aims to create new and exciting opportunities for young people, enabling them to step up as leaders and improve the lives of many others in the Commonwealth.

As well as receiving their Award from Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace, winners will receive a bespoke Awards package, which includes a year of training and mentoring from the University of Cambridge.

Award winners will also take part in a week-long residential programme in the UK, during which they will spend two days attending workshops at the University of Cambridge, meet with senior UK political and business leaders, and receive guidance from well-established social action projects.

To help raise awareness of the Awards and this exciting opportunity, influential artists from across the Commonwealth are encouraging as many young people as possible to get involved.

In Malawi, Hip-Hop artist Tay Grin is calling for young people to apply or nominate for the 2016 Queen’s Young Leaders Awards.

The artist, Tay Grin said: “This is a great platform for all the youth that are making a difference in Malawi. By participating you could be one of the lucky few chosen to receive recognition from Her Majesty Queen of England. As well as their Award winners will get the chance to interact with high profile people, partake in workshops that will significantly help equip them with leadership skills that would positively further their goals and help to positively develop this nation.”

Speaking about how important the Awards are in lifting and encouraging excellence amongst young people in Malawi, Tay added: “If you are doing great work or know anyone who is, make sure you participate in the 2016 Queen’s Young Leaders Awards”.

The search for the Queen’s Young Leaders Award winners was launched in 2014 by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry on behalf of The Queen. The winners of 2015 came from all over the Commonwealth and are working to support others, raise awareness and inspire change on a variety of different issues including; education, climate change, gender equality, mental health and attitudes towards disability.

The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme was established by The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust in partnership with Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society in recognition of The Queen’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth. Over the next three years the Programme will support thousands of young people.

In addition to the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards, the Programme will provide grants to support organisations in selected countries across the Commonwealth that work with young people to transform their lives.

Young people from all across the Commonwealth can apply or be nominated now to win an Award and become a Queen’s Young Leader of 2016. Applications close onMonday 7th September. Visit www.queensyoungleaders.com for more information. #TheSearchIsOn.

This is a good opportunity so let us learn to use opportunities well. Let us state what we need doing in our country let us for once focus on what matters instead of wasting time on what does not matter at all.

There is a lot of deserving young leaders in our country let us nominate them and support them kuti pa mawa if someone we do not like wins the award we then make noise

From hygiene point of view, hand shaking can transmit germs but that shouldn’t overtake the importance and meaning of a hand shake. A hand shake conveys oneness, love and goodwill. In the eyes of some of us, the Queens is a representation of a mother and you know what is means to be a mother. Mother Theresa would not shake hands while in gloves. In fact mother Theresa would put a severely malnourished African child on her lap.

It might have a good rationale for the Queen to shake hands with people while her hand is gloves but that habit can easily fall prey into conclusion that the Queen is a racist especially when she greets a black person. Can someone explain why the Queens hands to remain in gloves? Just thinking aloud!

Britain is fond of paying lip service to Malawi. They don’t have any will to see the country out of poverty and yet they are the ones who plundered our resources and continue to do so even up to this moment. We have the whole Road in Blantyre name after Queen Victoria. And the we have Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital without drugs. Why honouring people who have nothing to do with Malawi? Rename these structures please and remove the colonial name. If you go to UK, there are more Malawian doctors there than we have in this country. Exploitation continues!… Read more »

They take all the brilliant minds and brainwash them into worshipping the colonial masters. When they become leaders, they dance to the tune of the white imperialist masters. Be careful aMalawi anzanga, Mzungu samapanga zinthu without some serious calculations. Be warned!
