Silver third-place bid collapses: Malawi TNM Super League

Silver Strikers’ hopes of snatching the third place from Blue Eagles have vanished into thin air after the Central Bankers conceded a late goal against visiting Red Lions in a TNM Super League match played Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Fresh from a 6-0 demolition of relegated Karonga United at the same venue on Saturday, the Bankers looked set to challenge third-placed Blue Eagles for the third place but their hopes of dislodging the cops on the last day of the season were blown off when Red Lions’ Innocent Bokosi struck an equalizer for the visiting soldiers on the dot of regulation time.

Things appeared to be going the Bankers’ way after Ian Banda had given the Bankers’ a 76th minute lead following a dangerous cross from Chawanangwa Kaonga.

After the goal Silver resorted to some delaying tactics with goalkeeper Charles Swini dropping to the ground after every touch of the ball.

Their bench also got excited and replaced impressive centre back Lameck Kachimanga with Lucky Malata, who was making a come-back after being sidelined by injury.

The Central Bankers were duly punished for their complacency when Bokosi pounced on a loose ball inside the box to drive the ball home.

The result at Area 47 will be received as good news in Area 30 as this means Blue Eagles have sealed the third place without kicking the ball.

At 47 points and a game against Moyale Barracks remaining, the cops are now rest assured that none of the chasing pack can catch them even if they lose against the soldiers from Kaning’ina on the last day.
Coach Stain Chirwa conceded a top-three finish was now impossible for but said the bankers would strive to maintain the fourth-place in their closing fixture against Azam Tigers.

The Bankers are tied on 41 points with Civo and Red Lions but boast of a better goal-difference against the two candidates.

Red Lions’ coach Collins Nkuna, whose side has finished its assignments for the 2014 TNM Super League with 42 points praised his charges for the fighting spirit that earned the late equalizer:
“Silver were enjoying themselves. They thought they had the three points but my boys kept fighting until the last whistle.”

On the general performance of his side this season, Nkuna said he was not satisfied with the sixth position- currently being occupied by his side, saying he will try to reorganize the team during the off-season to challenge for the title next year.
