Staff petitions Blantyre Synod over Mulanje Mission CCAP  administrator, accountant

Mulanje Mission Hospital staff, who claim to have suffered and trampled upon in silence for a long period,  have penned their mother body CCAP Blantyre Synod over what they call mismanagement of resources, lack of transparency, corrupt practices and inconsistency in policy implementation by the facility’s management.

The disgruntled workers, who have also threatened to downs over the matter, claim  that the office of the administrator has a lot of inefficiencies and the one handling it is “full of corrupt practices”.

In a 12-paged letter, addressed to the Synod’s General Secretary Andrew Maulana and copied to the Minister of Health Jean Kalirani, Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) secretariat, Head of Station Reverend Billy Gama and the hospital’s Medical Director Dr. Ruth Shakespeare, among others, the employees including nurses have expressed fears that the hospital may collapse due to lack of transparency and corrupt practices.

“As Mulanje Mission hospital workers we are very dissatisfied with the current administrator’s integrity and professionalism. He swindles money, make shoddy deals and divert donor funds,” reads the letter in part.

The workers also wonder why their salaries are given a different taxation band for the same grade.

According to them, there is no difference between a civil servant and Cham servant on same grade.

“For the same grade why should the taxation percentage differ between a civil servant and a Cham servant with the same grade?

“Yet our basic salaries are paid by the very same government. Why are we treated in that manner,” states the letter dated November 18, 2014.

The letter also alleges that the Hospital Administrator, Piason Soka has resorted to recruiting witch-doctors, who according to the staff, make rounds at the facility sprinkling charms.

Another person being accused of corrupt practices, is the hospital’s accountant Yamikani Ngozo.

“As hospital workers we have been disappointed with these three offices on conduct integrity, qualification. We therefore ask for an overhaul of these offices; administrator, accountant and the secretary cum-human resource manager,” says the letter.

“A word to the Blantyre and Health Board, this hospital is collapsing in your eyes. We Mulanje Mission hospital employees understand you may want to protect someone but the dent that shall be put on this Mulanje Mission Hospital shall be very hard to repair.

“In the interest of the reputation of the hospital, we shall make sure we sent packing those that need to go with speed.

“We know we serve great lives here, even our relations and we shall not look akimbo when it is fast dwindling ye we know the culprits. As employees we respect you and thus the reason we are informing you in writing that you do the needful. Also you may wish to ignore this information and warnings; you shall do that at your own peril. All these issues are not rumours, more evidence shall be provided on request,” reads further the letter.
