Standard employees yet to get September salaries: Mtumodzi mum
All is not well at Lilongwe Standard Publications, new publishers of Standard newspaper with staff at the company not paid their salaries for September up to date.
Standard newspaper was previously owned by Lilongwe businessman Reegan Nkhoma before being taken over by former presidential secretary Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, who had wanted to hand it over to politicians from the ruling PP.
Having failed to convince the ruling elite, Mtumodzi has been struggling to raise funds for running the paper including printing costs resulting in the weekly paper failing to hit the streets according to schedule.
At one time, bosses from Design Printers had to hunt for Mtumodzi and his staff to go and collect printed copies as the interdicted Deputy PS for Disability and Elderly People hunted for money.
According to workers from the company, Mtumodzi later switched to Mecantile Printers, where he also failed to pay money, resulting in the seventh issue, which had adverts for Mothers’ Day failing to come
out.
Some staff have reportedly stopped reporting for duties after being told stories about their September salaries while others have been going to the office just to wait for their September salaries.
Mtumodzi refused to comment when Nyasa Times reporter in Lilongwe tried to get his side of the story.
