Substandard construction work of K400mil Rumphi stadium irks minister

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa, Tuesday expressed disappointment with the poor quality of construction work being done on the nearly K400 million sports stadium in Rumphi District.

Nankhumwa: Not pleased with construction work of Rumphi Stadium

Nankhumwa registered his dissatisfaction on Tuesday during his tour of Local Development Fund (LDF) projects.

In Rumphi he toured the sports stadium which is currently under construction.

The minister cited poor quality of concrete blocks, the general workmanship, absence of tap water and that of heavy equipment that is usually associated with big projects like a sports stadium.

“I am not at all impressed with the work that has been done. There is a lot that needs to be done to come up with a structure that will stand the test of time. The quality of concrete building blocks and part of the fence that has been constructed leave a lot to be desired.

“Even when looking at the general appearance of the construction site, there is no heavy equipment or machinery associated with projects of this magnitude,” bemoaned Nankhumwa.

He was also at pains with the slow pace at which the construction work was progressing. The minister also noted that work which has been done does not match well with the eleven week period that has passed since the onset of the project.

“I am also not happy with the pace of construction work. It is moving at a snail’s pace. The contractor started work in November, [2015] and this is now January end [2016].

“But look at the work that has been done, it is not measuring up with the period of time that has gone,” he observed.

The minister, therefore, said there is need for the contractor to raise standards in the quality of work for the stadium so that the final structure should have a lengthy lifespan and stand up to the test of time.

He dismissed suggestions that the standard of work was compromised because the money allocated to the project was not enough to sort out current economic realities on the ground.

“The money that has been allocated is enough because the work that is supposed to be done in the current phase will be construction of the fence, ticket offices, and ablution blocks.

“Other things that have not been considered in this phase, like the shops and VIP stands, will be done in the next phase,” he argued.-Mana

So it has to take the whole minister to identify the poor quality and progress? Where the technocrats at district level let alone the ministry? They should be taken to task for choosing not to do what they are suppossed to do.

The Minister has seen the poor work. He must act accordingly that the contractor is penalised, barred from further works performance, NCCI to be involved in the process of action process. we cannot wait to see people looting public money and ministers only blow hot air

Fire the contractor and let him or her smell no penny. We have a tendency of jobs for pals and compromising efficiency in the process. You cant appoint inexperienced contractors with no track record and expect the best. Let also those who appoint be scrutinised, they obviously not doing a good job. They should also face the chop
