The donation comes as a gesture of corporate social responsibility and an urge to support Government in painting a positive image of Malawi to the international community through the tourism industry according to Sunbird’s Group Sales and Marketing Manager, Levie Nkunika.

“As a hotel chain in Malawi, we would like to support Government in developing and promoting tourism in the country because we believe that growing the tourism cake is key to economic development as it makes businesses grow and creates employment opportunities,” explained Nkunika after handing over the dummy cheque to Director of Tourism, Isaac Katopola.

In a separate interview, Katopola explained that organizing an international event designed to sell Malawi’s positive image was a costly initiative and that the country’s tourism industry players had been requested to assist in making the expo a success.

“This sponsorship shows commitment from Sunbird to the Expo through which we are planting seeds to the country’s socio-economic development,” explained the Tourism Director who further disclosed that over 75 tourism players of the targeted 80 had so far confirmed participation in the event.

He also disclosed that the event had attracted at least 30 regional and international tourism buyers into Malawi who will have a feel of what tourism packages the country has to offer.

The three days event will involve a business-to-business interface during the first two days, and an open event on the third day, access to which will require registration from interested members of the general public through www.tourism.mw.
