Tembo hits MCP’s campaign trail to propel Chakwera
Former Leader of the Opposition who is also former president of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) John Tembo has vowed to give his full political weight to his successor Dr Lazarus Chakwera as he seeks election of the Head of State in the May 20 elections.
Chakwera’s campaign is expected to gain much-needed financial clout and political experience from Tembo. But the support of his predecessor is not in itself likely to attract many new voters, except in MCP stronghold central region.
Tembo joined the MCP campaign trail during the weekend when he travelled to Matenje in the area of Traditional Authority Khombeza in Salima.

His open support for Chakwera’s presidential bid is a sharp contrast with the speculations which has been linking Tembo having endorsed President Joyce Banda.
Speaking to the MCP supporters, Tembo urged voters to turn up in large numbers to elect Chakwera as new Malawi president.
“I am convinced that Chakwera is the leader that Malawi needs if we are to develop and reclaim our lost glory. It is Chakwera and MCP in the way forward,” said Tembo.
He said he is of the view that Chakwera is the only person to steer this country for positive social, political and economic gains.
On this note, Tembo called on voters to vote wisely in the coming polls.
He also canvassed votes for Dr Jessie Kabwira to be parliamentarian for MCP.
“Come this May vote for Dr Jessie Kabwira because she is geared to change the lives of ordinary people here in Salima, “said Tembo.
