Thousands of unemployed primary teachers threaten demo

Thousands of qualified teachers that completed their studies in 2009 through the IPTE9 and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes of the country’s Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) have threatened stage demonstrations should government keep on casting a blind eye regarding their fate.

Teachers set to hold demo

The teachers, most with nothing to do for three years now, said it was unfortunate that government had no use of them despite coughing billions of tax payers’ money to train them.

One of the disgruntled teachers who was at Lilongwe TTC but refused to be named told local press on Tuesday that should government do nothing in the next twenty-one days, they will begin planning for the protests.

“Why did they train us if they knew we were useless? We are tired of government’s silence and we give them only twenty one days for them to act otherwise they should expect the worst from us,” said the teacher.

But Lindiwe Chide, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology told Zodiak that government was “looking into” the matter.

Apart from the primary teachers, government has also not been able to employ graduate teachers since two years ago due to lack of funds.
