The problems started after a trigger-happy police officer shot a 15-year old boy on the stomach twice due to crowd trouble.

It was reported that some thieves stole phones, while on a queue to enter the stadium resulting in a police officer trying to arrest one of them.

The suspected thieves were trying to run away forcing the police officer to fire a bullet, which landed on the 15-year old boy.

This development angered some fans, who started pelting stones to the police before smashing their car.

In order to restore calm, the police fired teargas canisters’ and the smoke filtered into the stadium forcing the play to stop.

Players, officials and some fans, who sat on the southern stands had run away as the smoke was all over the field of play.

However, there were no violence inside the stadium.

The game was stopped twice, as Sulom officials, referees and the security personnel’s were busy banging heads to find the way forward.

When Nyasa Times visited Queen Elizabeth Hospital it was really found that the 15-year old boy, who was shot has been admitted in the theatre room.

“He had bullets wounds on the stomach. He was brought at the hospital unconscious but now he is stable,” said the official.

Super League of Malawi spokesman, Tiya Somba Banda described the whole situation as unfortunate because it happened outside the stadium but affected the game.

Banda said they are waiting for further investigations on what really transpired outside the stadium for the police to fire teargas, which disrupted the game.

The game

Back in the field of play, Moyale Barracks kicked-off the game on a high note, as they dominated the proceedings of the game.

However, their striking force lacked composure, as they were jittery inside the box.

The Nomads, struggled on the left defence in the first half with the absence of Francis Mlimbika, who is nursing an injury.

Stewart Gerald, who was called on duty to replace Mlimbika struggled to tame the Soldiers up to an extent of receiving a yellow card for being rough.

Moyale’s midfielder Crispin Fukizi scored through a long range volley that left the hosts goalkeeper Richard Chinansi with no chance seconds after restart.

However, the Nomads reorganised themselves and started playing like a team though they missed a number of scoring opportunities with Luka Milanzi being the main culprit, when his shot went wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Welcoming back their usual strikers, Muhammad Sulumba and Jimmy Zakazaka, the Nomads piled up pressure to the visitors but they could not kiss the back of Moyale’s net.

It was Chrispin Fukizi, who broke the Nomads hearts with his long range drive that caught Richard Chipuwa off guard.

Towards the end of the game, super substitute Mapopa Kaunda scored an equalizer through a powerful header and  left Wanderers winless in four attempts at the giant stadium.

The Nomads made several changes, introducing Mike Kaziputa and Kondwani Kumwenda for Ibrahim Sadiki and Jacob Ngwira.

The draw left Bullets certain of topping the first round. They certainly cannot be dislodged after third-placed Blue Eagles lost 2-0 on Saturday to Mzuni to remain on 23 points from 13 games, two behind Wanderers and six behind the Bullets.

Breathing on the Eagles’ neck are Azam Tigers who made it two consecutive wins following a 4-1 punishment of Dedza Young Soccer Stars on Sunday at Kalulu.

Bernard Harawa, Bright Munthali and Dan Nyirenda were among the scorers for the coach Gerald Phiri senior’s men who jumped a step to fourth on 23 points from 13 games.

Tigers are trailed by Mafco on 22 points after winning 3-2 in a five-goal thriller staged in Chitowe Stadium in the Central Region where Kalista Kalinda double and Richard Mbulu won the game.
