Uladi says honarary doctorate degree to help him lead

Newly crowned Dr. Uladi Mussa, the acting president of Peoples Party has been paying tribute to Cypress University for decorating him with an honorary doctorate degree.

He said the honourary doctorate will help him instill the sense of hard working in politicians at parliament.

“Some of them absent themselves from the House as it pleases them, others seem not to love their job, they seem to have joined for personal gain rather than serve the people they represent. With this honour, I will be with them to make them understand their role,” said Mussa.

Mussa received his doctorate degree on Saturday in Lilongwe.

He is the second person to receive a doctorate degree to do with politics this year after John Tembo, retired politician who has served as Leader of Opposition and Malawi Congress Party president who was awarded the degree by the University of Malawi.

Mussa says he joined politics in 1991 and rose through the political rank and file by joining parliament in 1994, serving as regional governor for the United Democratic Front, deputy minister, served in various cabinet portfolios in former presidents Bakili Muluzi, Bingu wa Mutharika and Joyce Banda.

He was also chairman of Joyce Banda presidential campaign team. Mussa is currently acting leader of Peoples Party. He has never lost his parliamentary seat since he grabbed it at the dawn of multiparty democracy in 1994.

Others who received honorary degrees this year include First Lady Gertrude Mutharika and President Peter Mutharika.

Academicians however say holders of honorary doctorate degrees are not supposed to be referred as doctors.

Nelson Mandela held a dozen honorary degrees but was being referred to as Mr. so too Barack Obama, the US president.

An honorary degree is not worth the paper it is printed on, nor does it entitle the recipient to use it as a title. Anyone who lays great store by such an honorary degree is only demonstrating their lack of education and learning and demeaning themselves.

From warm heart of Africa to cold heart of PhDs.Malawians,we are really and truthfully the laughing stock of the World. Honarary Phd is not something to be proud of,it does not bring into the country any progressive achievement that would enhance economic and political stability, but rather corruption, incompetence and disastrous to moral standards. As of today for your information,Africa leads the world on PhDs holders, and yet,our continent is least developed in the world.I would be of course proud of my BA or Masters obtained through hard work which is effective and dignified better than PHD received on silver-platter.the sad part of it… Read more »
