US gospel hip-hop star Lecrae to perform in Malawi

America’s top Christian hip-hop artist, Lecrae Moore, popularly known by his first name Lecrae is scheduled to perform in Malawi.

The 32-year-old rapper, who is touring Africa with five other US gospel rappers, will be performing at Cresta Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe on November 20 from 1:30pm.

Lusayo Mhango of Imago Dea (ID), organizers of the Malawian concert confirmed that the celebrated Grammy nominated artist would be visiting the country.

“He is on an African ‘Unashamed Tour’ and Malawi is blessed to host him. The other artists include Trip Lee, KB, Pro, Tedashii and Andy Mineo,” disclosed Mhango. “This will be a very big event.”

He told Nyasa Times the artists will arrive in the country on the same date of their performance.

The ‘Unashamed Malawi Concert’ has been organized by ID in partnership with a Christian organization called Young Life to help raise funds for Chigumula-based Christian Transformation Centre (CTC) which does street children rehabilitation projects.

“We hope to use this event to continue treating Malawians with top quality music events that impact their lives in more than just entertainment,” said Mhango.

Signed to Reach Records, the record label that he co-founded, Lecrae is currently the top selling Christian hip-hop artist whose recent album, ‘Rehab: The Overdose’, released earlier this year, was even toppling Eminem’s ‘Recovery’ on its first week of release on iTunes.

Thus far the artist, who is also a member of the rap group 116 Clique, with which he collaborates frequently, has released five solo studio albums.

Apart from Malawi, Lecrae and his fellow US Christian rappers will also perform in Botswana, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Earlier this year ID and Young Life brought into the country the first international Christian hip-hop artist Flame, who performed at Comesa Hall in Blantyre. The event was patronised by a crowd of at least 1,400 people mostly youths.
