Voice Mhone tells PAC ‘mum hails from Thyolo’: Rejected
Ambassador-designate to Germany Voice Mhone failed to persuade the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament during interviews for diplomatic posts to confirm him by saying he comes from the President Peter Mutharika’s home district of Thyolo.
All along Mhone, former chairman of Council for Non government organisations (Congoma) has used Nkhatabay in the northern region as his home.
But he told PAC of his connection to the Lhomwe belt, saying his mother was from Thyolo.
PAC reportedly could not confirm his appointment but referred it back to President Mutharika.
Other names who failed to get the nod of the committee included Ambassador-designate to Brazil Edward Sawerengera, High Commissioner-designate to South Africa Chrissie Kaponda and Ambassador-designate to Egypt Yunus Mussa.
Kaponda had links with the Lhomwe tribal grouping, Mulhako wa Alhomwe, but also had unspecified contracts with government and failed to convince the committee whether these would be terminated on her appointment.
PAC confirmed on merit Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union Ted Kalebe, Ambassador to the United States of America Necton Mhura, Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union (AU) Chimango Chirwa and High Commissioner to Mozambique Frank Viyazyi—were approved.
Chimango Chirwa also said his father was from Euthini in Mzimba, but his mother was from Mulanje.
PAC was interviewing the appointees with the exception of Thoko Banda who was disqualified when it was learnt that he had called leader of Zimbabwe President Mugabe an ‘idiot’ in an interview he had conducted while in Germany.

As a full malawian I have no qualms with those that passed through PAC’s grilling or failed to do so. My problem is why one would wish to be affiliated with Lhomweism then he feels he would easily succeed to go through PAC’s test. Lets be who we are and do for our country what it is required to be done than have the prowess of thinking that Mulhakho would be a National issue. We have one Malawi to serve not two. Acake for Lomwes only hmmmm
Sometimes we create problems deliberately. In Germany there is Oliver Kumbambe, a long serving Police Officer who rose to IG. He is well qualified with a BA from UNIMA and an MBA and has been in foreign service for more than five years deputising his former lecturer (at Chanco) in Germany, Dr Isaac Lamba. Dr. Lamba left Germany two or so years ago, is it really fair to make him deputise a novice in Voice Mhone? Of course I do not know the academic qualifications and experience of Voice apart from his CSO work.
From my uneducated view are U saying all appointments must be connected with Lomweism bravo PAC kill that tendency pliz, everybody needs decent life regardless of tribe connections.
Is Ted Kalebe not too old? I think anybody over sixty should not be appointed to position of this nature. Remember, an ambassador actually does work unlike a politician who has work done for him or her. PAC has got it wrong on Ted Kalebe in my opinion.
Fools are running govt. Quality is no longer an issue not. It is basically when you come from that matters. Big up PAC you are the only hope of sanity in this country being run by a he-goat of a president.
