The Volleyball Association of Malawi(VAM) has criticised volleyball committees in the country for allegedly failing to make full use of the Lake Malawi beaches by exposing them to the abusive hand of some tourists and locals who instead use them as podiums for smoking marijuana than developing talent.
VAM General Secretary Jairos Nkhoma said most tourists and companies in the country have a lot of money that could be used for uplifting the slowly dying sport but because of the laziness and lack of game passion, such opportunities are never explored, leaving the game to suffer.
Nkhoma who is also an international volleyball Federation instructor made the statement on Sunday at St. Andrews C.C.A.P Primary School Hall in Mzuzu during the Northern Region volleyball elections where delegates re-elected Kafumu Nkhoma as their chairperson for the next four years fourth term in office up to the year 2020 un opposed.
“Honestly, I am disapointed at the way we run volleyball in the Malawi . Instead of making our Lake Malawi beaches busy and beautiful with beach volleyball, we leave them to some foreighners and local Malawians who make them podiums for chamba smoking,” Nkhoma said.
Nkhoma challenged Kafumu and his regional committee to form strategic plannings that could be used in scaling up the levels of volleyball in Malawi saying he does not want to see two people being active when over 15 have been given posts .
“As VAM, we value elections because they are the back-bone of the successful sport hence i was chosen to represent its office here in the Northern Malawi and we are happy that three women have found their way in which is a requirement if democratic issues to do with gender in sports are anything to go by,” said Nkhoma.
However, Nkhoma urged women to work hard for their roles given saying he does not want them to be in the committee simply to fill the numbers but perform to the satisfaction just like men if they are to win the respect in the country,” said Nkhoma who also gave tips as to how project proposals can pass to projected financers.
