This mine has always courted controversy. In real sense, Mr Wadi is just a face. The company is owned by certain other “Malawian oligarchs” and at the end of the day it will be the same story. They will deplete the mine without fulfilling any corporate social responsibility and the people of the area won’t benefit; they will clandestinely export the rubies whilst under declaring to evade tax; their proceeds will be banked offshore so the economy won’t have much to take.
