Wanderers give Nigerian star debut as they beat Evirom 1-0 in friendly
Mighty Be Forward Wanderers produced an impressive display to beat Envirom FC 1-0 in a friendly match on Friday at Country Club in Limbe.
Jacob Ngwira scored the only goal, poking home through a powerful header from a well curved corner kick in the first half.
Evirom faded after a strong first-half performance, although they tried to come back towards the end of the game with a powerful shot which was well tamed by Peter Munthali in Nomads goals.
Nomads coach Elijah Kananji fielded two teams with Nigerian based Olashipe James Tolulope given an opportunity to show his skills.
Tolulope showed some brilliance when he partnered with the likes of Jimmy Zakazaka and Muhammad Sulumba and they gave Evirom no time on the ball as the home side dominated the first half.
The 22-year-old Nigerian, who played for South Africa Premier Soccer League outfit Chippa United in 2011 and claims to have earned Nigeria Under-20 national team call-ups then, has joined the Nomads as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Nigerian Premier League side Ibadan FC.
Despite the Nomads took time to settle, they provided a reminder of their quality when Evirom goalkeeper kept out Zakazaka after a flowing move that saw the former Big Bullets striker combine neatly with Sulumba.
The Nomads were much the better team after half-time though, and threatened almost immediately, with Peter Nselema and Francis Mlimbika preventing the visitors from converting.
Soon after Jacob Ngwira put the Nomads ahead, they created further chances in quick succession but their striking force lacked composure inside the 18 yard box.
Towards the end of the first half, Richard Chipuwa was a spectator in the Nomads goal, and watched on as an Enviroe keeper tipped Sulumba’s deflected right-foot shot onto the post to keep his side in it.
Evirom late scare gave them hope of a dramatic late equalizer, but they failed to build further momentum and the Nomads control of possession ensured no further alarms.
There are now 36 players in trials at Wanderers and the squad will be trimmed to 25 players in three weeks.
Coach Elia Kananji said he was happy with the team, saying playing are starting to gel.
“I am so happy with them,” he said.
The coach said he is happy with the squad they have. He stressed: “We feel that the correct squad is exactly this type of squad we have.” –(Additional reporting by Jeromy Kadewere, Nyasa Times)
