Water crisis cripples health services at Kamuzu Central Hospital

A water problem has hit hard Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe making it impossible for personnel to provide hygienic health services, Nyasa Times has learnt.

Guardians at the hospital have expressed their worries over the development, saying medical personnel are capitalizing on the problem not to attend to their patients.

“There’s no water here [at KCH] and our patients aren’t being attended to on hygienic grounds. It is hard for everyone,” said Eneless Banda, one of the guardians.

According to some sources within the hospital’s management, which is refusing to comment on the matter, it is uncertain when the problem started.

Malawi hospitals, most of which offer services on a free basis, experience a number of problems.

Recently, Nyasa Times reported that drug shortages in the hospitals had hit 80 percent.
